The City of Romulus has not received official communication from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) regarding the proposed use of 7525 Cogswell as an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center, according to Mayor Robert A. McCraight. However, city officials have found documents on a DHS website that indicate plans to open such a facility at that address.
Mayor McCraight stated that his administration opposes the project due to concerns about its potential effects on residents, public safety services, and the local economy. “We remain steadfast in our efforts to discourage a detention facility in Romulus. Simply put, Romulus cannot sustain the impact to our residents, our public safety departments nor the economic impact to our community and the region should DHS open such a facility in an already overburdened and underserved city,” said McCraight.
He added that his team is working with legislators at various levels of government to voice opposition: “My administration is focused on protecting our residents and ensuring Romulus remains a safe community, and are seeking support from local, state and federal legislators to hear our message of opposition.”
Mayor McCraight also referenced a recent letter he sent on February 16, 2026, addressed to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Acting Director Lyons. He shared news of a joint response dated February 25, 2026, from U.S. Senator Gary Peters and U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin.
McCraight assured residents he would provide updates as more information becomes available.
