Trenton advances hospital cleanup, DTE demolition, and public safety facility plans

Work continues at the Riverside Hospital site in Trenton, where large concrete footings are being broken down and rebar is being removed for recycling. Once this phase is complete, a rock crusher will be brought in to grind the concrete so it can be used as fill material. Dirt already present on the site will be graded to ensure proper water management. The restoration of the north boulder wall is also planned, and the project will conclude with the installation of grass seed and additional fencing.

The property remains under regular supervision by an appointed Court Receiver who visits frequently.

Demolition work at the DTE plant is progressing on or ahead of schedule. The initial phase involved removing more than 70 structures of various sizes and complexities. City representatives inspect the site professionally at least once a week, and other agencies conduct inspections as needed to address issues such as asbestos removal and demolition safety. Demolition and site restoration activities are expected to continue into 2026.

In addition, work on the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project has started and is advancing as anticipated.

Following voter approval of a bond for fire, police, and municipal building improvements, planning efforts have increased for new police and fire stations as well as upgrades to other municipal buildings. Officials intend to move forward with these projects promptly but emphasize a careful approach regarding budgeting and planning. Final decisions about building locations have not yet been made.

“We plan on commencing as many of the improvements and projects as quickly as we can, but we want to be fiscal and thoughtful in our approach. The bigger projects (police and fire stations) will be approached the same way, much of how they will be built and how they will look will be dependent on the locations used, which have not been finalized,” according to city officials.
