WAYNE COUNTY: Wayne County Commissioner Baker McCormick to launch 'The War on Trash' initiative on Sept. 7

Meeting 09

Wayne County issued the following announcement on Aug. 20

Wayne County Commissioner Monique Baker McCormick, D-Detroit, has scheduled a meeting for 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7 to launch "The War on Trash," an anti-littering campaign targeting her northwest Detroit commission district.

The meeting will be held on the campus of Life Challenge Ministries, 17667 Pierson, Detroit. It will include community partners "Together 4 Good" and "Block by Block" and feature a free lunch cookout, live music and bike drawing as well as other family-friendly activities.

Stop and Drop involves the act of dropping trash from moving cars. It is a problem in District 6, Commissioner Baker McCormick said, and "The War on Trash" involves spreading an anti-littering message to the community, especially its young people.

Toward that end, Commissioner Baker McCormick is partnering with the Detroit Public Schools Community District and four schools within District 6 on art and writing projects designed to spread an anti-littering message. Students will also be involved in community beautification projects in areas near their schools.

"We must teach our children to love where they live and keep their neighborhoods clean and green," Commissioner Baker McCormick said.

The commissioner also hopes to work with local businesses, community organizations and churches on additional projects to promote "The War on Trash."
