CITY OF WAYNE MICHIGAN: Detroit Mother Charged in Homicide of Infant Son

City of Wayne Michigan issued the following announcement on Dec. 9

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Rhionna Nichols, 20 (DOB: 02/13/1999), of Detroit, in connection with the death of her 20-month-old infant son.

On December 5, 2019 at approximately 5:00 p.m., EMS technicians responded to a 911 call for an unresponsive infant in the 19300 block of Kentucky Street in Detroit. Upon arrival, the medics located an unconscious infant and transported him to a local hospital for treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries. It is alleged that the defendant caused fatal head trauma resulting in his death. Nichols was placed under arrest. The facts and evidence of the case will be presented at the Preliminary Examination.

Nichols has been charged with Felony Murder, First Degree Child Abuse and Torture.* She was arraigned this afternoon in 36th District Court. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for December 20, 2019 at 8:30 a.m.; the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for December 27, 2019. Both hearings are before 36th District Court Judge Kenyetta Stanford. Please request a photo of the defendant from the Detroit Police Department.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
