If individuals or businesses in Michigan are caught violating social distancing guidelines, the state's Department of Health and Human Services will fine them up to $1,000.
On April 2, Robert Gordon, Michigan's Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) director, announced that any organization or person caught violating social distance orders will receive a fine that could amount to $1,000 as a penalty. Individuals can also receive criminal penalties
“A person can have coronavirus without knowing it,” Gordon said in a news release. “They can spread the disease to others who can spread it to others. The only way to stop the spread is social distancing. A civil penalty and potential licensing actions send a strong message to Michiganders that social distancing is essential to saving lives.”
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's executive orders make is so large events or gatherings are prohibited and schools are temporarily closed, according to the News-Herald. The governor has placed restrictions on the use of public accommodations and all travel. Her executive orders have also banned individuals from going into work unless their place of business is considered essential.
