Michigan Sen. Mike Shirkey (R-Clarklake) condemned the violent protests saying they were disgraceful and called for the prosecution of the lawbreakers.

“The violent actions at our nation's Capitol are a disgrace. Today should have been a peaceful event. I condemn the actions of the individuals who threatened our members of Congress and our Republic. They are criminals who should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Shirkey posted on his Twitter.

The Michigan Senate GOP also posted on its official Twitter page, castigating the violence.

“What is happening in Washington, D.C. today is not a protest - it is criminal and it is deplorable. America does not resolve its political differences through violence and anyone who attempts to do so must be arrested and punished to the fullest extent of the law,” read the statement on its Twitter account.

In response, a Twitter user who goes by the pseudonym LionsDontFearSheep, blamed the State GOP for not taking enough action as they should have, “stepped up and addressed the overwhelming fraud that took place in Detroit in the wee hours of the morning. Blatant fraudulent ballots being dumped that we all knew were fraud the moment it happened. Michigan went red in 2020.”

The attack on the U.S. Capitol occurred as federal lawmakers were gearing up to count the Electoral College votes and officially declare President-elect Joe Biden as the winner of the general election last November.

Of the storming in and rioting of pro-Trump supporters, the Oakland County GOP Chair Andrew Raczkowski said it was an act of terrorism.

"I would call them lawless, I would call them domestic terrorists because in some cases some of them brought fear," he said as reported by Fox 2 Detroit. "And to attack the citadel of American freedom, the nation’s Capitol, there are ways we have our voices heard. This is not the way to do it."

Representatives and senators were evacuated from the House chamber. It wasn’t until later that night and early into the morning of Jan. 7 when they could continue the counting of the votes. Biden was officially declared the winner after 3 a.m.
