City of Taylor issued the following announcement on Oct 8.
City Council earlier this week set in motion actions that may lead to a change in Taylor’s curbside waste, recycling and compost service provider.
Council voted unanimously to send a ”notice of default” to Green for Life Environmental (GFL), the City of Taylor’s current provider. GFL has been the City’s vendor for several years. GFL purchased Taylor’s previous waste hauler, Rizzo Environmental Services. GFL, which originated in Canada, serves communities throughout the southeast Michigan region. The “notice of default” could result in termination of the contract, for cause, after a 14-day period.
If the contract with GFL ends, Priority Waste LLC is in line to provide emergency curbside services, according to a second resolution passed by council. Priority would fulfill the rest of the current contract.
GFL has struggled to keep with its contractual obligations since the worldwide pandemic of 2020. Residents across Taylor, and other communities in the region, have complained of missed service and/or long delays. Some residents said they have had compost bags out “for weeks” without pickup.
GFL officials have told Taylor leaders that because of the pandemic, they suffered through staffing shortages. In addition, when vehicles and machinery broke down and needed repairs, there were delays in the production and delivery cycles. Per the current contract, if GFL misses or delays service anywhere along their routes, they can be “fined” $100 per miss, based on certain specific criteria. The City of Taylor has “fined” GFL tens of thousands of dollars as a result.
Priority Waste is a Macomb-based organization with locations in Romulus, Oakland County, Lapeer County, Genesee County, Hamtramck and Detroit. It serves Gibraltar, Grosse Ile and Westland, among a long list of others. In additional to residential curbside pickup, it also offers construction/industrial, commercial and transfer station service.
The 14-day period defined in the notice of default falls in line with the City’s next council meeting, which is scheduled for Tuesday, October 19.
