The City of Detroit revealed that metro Detroit resident Mary Engelman was hired as the Detroit Police Department's (DPD) new Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion executive manager. Chief James White called her appointment a game-changer for the community, according to the city's website.
Engelman is the former deputy director and interim director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, the website said. Her job includes creating an inclusive environment by improving diversity, equity, and inclusion from the ground up in the DPD, going as high as the office of the chief. This will be accomplished through community events and investment in the department.
“I’m grateful for this amazing opportunity to help make the Detroit Police Department leaders in diversity, equity, and inclusion,” Engelman said. “With Chief White’s leadership and support in this area, the department will continue its standard of 21st century policing for Detroiters.”
Engelman received a bachelor’s degree in English from Evangel University, according to the website. She has a vast background in leadership roles, as well as in government affairs and community outreach. She has worked in operations and budget management throughout her career. Engelman is currently the liaison to the Michigan Women’s Commission and serves on the Michigan Poverty Task Force and the Michigan Coronavirus Task Force on Racial Disparities Committee.
White applauded the hiring of Engelman through a statement on the website. “I’m a firm believer that we become better with a commitment to equal opportunity for all,” White said. “We are proud to welcome Mary to our team.”
