Mayor Tim Woolley is releasing the following statement after an accidental shooting by Taylor Auxiliary volunteers in a remote portion of Heritage Park on Sunday, April 24. The victim, a member of the exercise, was shot in the abdomen during a “vehicle take-down training” segment. He was transported to Trenton Beaumont Hospital and is recovering.
“First of all, I’d like to say that our hearts and prayers are with the victim of the shooting and his family,” said Mayor Woolley. “As a result of the incident, an investigation is currently underway by Michigan State Police.”
“Once that investigation ends, the City will evaluate the findings and implement corrective measures,” Mayor Woolley continued. “It goes without saying that my administration, Taylor Police and the Auxiliary are taking this incident extremely seriously.
“As an immediate response to the incident, I can state that the following decisions have been made …”
- The entire Auxiliary program is on temporary suspension pending the outcome of the MSP investigation. That currently includes less than 20 volunteers.
- The final written examination for this year’s graduating class of the Auxiliary, scheduled this week, has been postponed,
- The new class’s graduation date of April 30 has been postponed.
- A chaplain is counseling members of the Auxiliary who might be under emotional duress due to this incident.
