Our prayers and thoughts are with Uvalde, Texas.
The Southgate Police Department directs our patrol officers to our schools every single day. They will often be in the schools, meeting students and staff, familiarizing with the layouts.
We have a school resource officer dedicated to the schools. There is armed, retired law enforcement working in our school district.
Our officers attend Active Shooter training and are directed to immediately respond to any and all threats. Our training directs us to get to the threat and to neutralize the threat.
SPD has ALICE trainers on staff that work with our schools to help them prepare to respond to an active threat situation.
We actively work with the Southgate Schools and the Crisis District Team, assisting with their Emergency Operations Plans.
The Southgate Schools are active in inviting us to help them prepare for emergency incidents. The Southgate Schools are currently looking into systems to further upgrade and prepare against these type of situations. They invited us to attend meetings and welcome our input.
We work diligently with all of our schools, public and private, to actively investigate all threats.
Ongoing training continues and we regularly work with our other Downriver agencies. If an active situation occurs in a local community, expect any and all departments to respond and assist.
