State leaders are encouraging citizens to take advantage of health insurance plans during the open enrollment period.
People who are interested in buying a health care plan on the Health Insurance Marketplace must do so by Jan. 15, according to a press release from the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS). Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) and Anita Fox, DIFS director, revealed the news earlier this month.
"Access to quality, affordable health insurance improves health outcomes overall, and that's why it's vital for Michiganders who need health insurance for 2023 to pick a plan before the Jan. 15 open enrollment deadline," Whitmer said in the press release. "This year, Michiganders have more time, more support, and more resources to get covered. I will continue to work with anyone to cut costs for Michiganders and build a healthier Michigan where families can thrive."
Over 1.7 million consumers nationwide have signed up for a plan so far, the press release noted. That number is an 18% increase when compared to this time last year.
"If you need health insurance, the biggest mistake you could make is to wait and miss the Jan. 15 deadline, leaving you without insurance unless you later qualify for a special enrollment period due to a qualifying life change," Fox said in the press release. "Even if you are happy with your current health plan and do not want to make a change, you should consider updating your HealthCare.gov application to make sure you are getting all the savings to which you are entitled. You can find more information about health insurance, including a pre-recorded DIFS health insurance town hall, by visiting Michigan.gov/HealthInsurance."
Those interested in examining available health care plans and rates can visit HealthCare.gov, according to the press release. Anyone who applies before Jan. 15 will have health care coverage beginning on Feb. 1. DIFS will hold several town hall meetings to answer questions. For questions about health insurance and information about the town hall series, call 877-999-6442 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
