State Representative Jamie Thompson of Brownstown has voiced her concerns regarding a planned waste dump in Belleville, Wayne County. The site is expected to receive about 25 semitrucks of elevated radioactive waste weekly until January, as reported by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The waste originates from a New York location associated with the Manhattan Project.

Rep. Thompson stated, “It’s time to stop treating Wayne County as America’s dumping ground,” emphasizing that the ongoing situation is detrimental to local communities and their environment.

Thompson criticized the Whitmer Administration for prioritizing toxic waste disposal over Michigan residents' well-being. She highlighted previous instances where public opposition was overlooked, such as in 2020 when an increase in toxic waste capacity was approved for a Detroit facility, and in 2023 when hazardous materials from Ohio were disposed of in Michigan without notifying local officials.

Despite opposition, the Department of Energy, Great Lakes, and Environment renewed operating permits for a local waste facility for another decade. Rep. Thompson reiterated the sentiments of Wayne County residents who oppose being "America’s dumping ground" and expressed disappointment with Lansing Democrats' decisions.
