State Representative Jamie Thompson has introduced a new legislative proposal aimed at enhancing communication and collaboration within Michigan's state government to tackle the opioid crisis. The proposed House Bill 5967 mandates that the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) share its data with the state's Opioid Advisory Commission when compiling annual reports. Currently, DHHS maintains records on various aspects of opioid-related overdose fatalities in Michigan.

Thompson emphasized the importance of information sharing among different government bodies and panels working on this issue. "Michigan lost nearly 3,000 people to overdoses in 2023. These are sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, friends and loved ones people will never get back," stated Thompson from Brownstown. She stressed the need for leaders in Lansing to be aligned as they explore strategies and improve access to treatment while promoting recovery and prevention options.

The Opioid Advisory Commission consists of 12 members appointed by the legislature with expertise in substance use disorder treatment, overdose prevention, mental health care, recovery support, first responder work, among other areas. The commission plays an advisory role in guiding lawmakers on the allocation of Michigan’s portion of national opioid settlement funds over an 18-year period. Half of these funds will be directly distributed to local governments while the remainder is managed by the state.

"Without collaboration, we’re not figuring out how to best use these resources and provide life-saving care," Thompson added. Her plan seeks to ensure improved communication and data sharing for more effective outcomes.

Rep. Thompson is also a member of several committees including the House Families, Children, and Seniors Committee; the House Health Policy Committee; and the House Health Policy Subcommittee on Behavioral Health.
