State Representative Jamie Thompson has announced the formation of new legislative committees aimed at enhancing government oversight in Michigan. These committees will focus on various issues, including child welfare, corporate subsidies, public health, and foreign influence. Both Republican and Democrat representatives will be part of these panels.
"A government that works responsibly and in the best interest of the people has not been a priority in Lansing," said Thompson. She highlighted concerns over taxpayer money being allocated to projects with Chinese ties and severance agreements for state employees without adequate transparency or accountability.
The initiative includes a comprehensive audit of state government processes. A key focus for Thompson is the Oversight subcommittee dedicated to child welfare. Her advocacy in this area stems from her previous work, which included requesting a performance review of the Hawthorn Center after meeting with victims and families in 2023.
Thompson collaborated with Jami Vaughn to raise awareness about child welfare issues after an incident involving Vaughn's son at Walter P. Reuther Psychiatric Hospital was captured on video. Despite efforts to prompt hearings by the Democrat-led House Health Policy Committee, no hearings have taken place amid ongoing allegations of mistreatment.
"I have been sickened by report after report showing we are cutting corners or falling short when it comes to looking out for children who are in the care of the state," Thompson stated. She emphasized that children deserve safety and their families should trust that state facilities ensure their well-being.
Thompson believes this committee will delve into why failures continue within the child welfare system and seek improvements through dialogue with state officials. The aim is to ensure procedures protect future generations' health and well-being.
