State Representative Jamie Thompson has been appointed to a new select committee aimed at supporting Michigan workers and small businesses. The Select Committee on Protecting Michigan Employees and Small Businesses was established to address economic challenges following a recent Michigan Supreme Court decision that imposes mandates on wages and sick leave, affecting the service industry.

Thompson, representing Brownstown, expressed concern over the impact of these mandates. "Many small businesses and their workers have already been through the wringer the past few years with COVID-19 shutdowns and inflation sending costs through the roof," said Thompson. He emphasized the need for legislative solutions to prevent business closures and job losses.

The committee's formation comes as surveys indicate potential layoffs by two-thirds of Michigan restaurant operators if the mandates proceed. Additionally, 94% of businesses expect significant price increases for consumers, with one in five full-service restaurants facing possible permanent closure.

House Republicans have introduced House Bills 4001 and 4002 in response, aiming to balance economic growth with worker protection. These bills propose preserving tipped wages while moving towards a higher minimum wage and maintaining current earned sick leave policies without overburdening small businesses.

State Senators have also put forward proposals addressing the tip credit and Earned Sick Time Act. Thompson remarked on this bipartisan effort: “Lansing needs to deliver a better way forward for thousands of people whose lives will be upended in February through no fault of their own.” He noted encouragement from Senate Democrats prioritizing this issue alongside House Republicans.

The select committee, comprising both Republican and Democrat legislators, is scheduled to hold its first hearing next week.
